Boarding Pass Validator DESKO BPV 502

9th September, 2009 – In its continuing expansion of the electronic Boarding Pass (eBP) program, Continental Airlines has added 18 new cities this summer offering this new service.  This program offers passengers the choice to receive their Boarding Pass, with 2D barcode, on their Web or WAP enabled cell phone or PDA.  Viewed initially as a service for business travelers and power users, the eBP program is expected to grow as the penetration of smart phones, touch screen technology, and Web enabled applications continue to expand.

In a move that has pushed the check-in process to everywhere… Desko provides a key component to the airline, airport and security community – a completely interoperable, portable, shared device for validation of cell phone and PDA issued boarding passes. This multi-use device becomes another tool for TSA to detect copied or fraudulent boarding passes, at the same time increasing customer service.

The Desko device, called the Boarding Pass Validator or BPV, launched with Northwest Airlines in September 2008, and now 1 year later the BPV is found in major hubs all over the US like ATL, DTW, SFO, EWR, IAH, and LAX. In March 2009 Las Vegas McCarran International Airport deployed the Desko product and became the first airport in the US to offer eBP screening in an interoperable, shared way with 4 airlines: NW, CO, DL, and AA.  The BPV has quickly been adopted as the leading equipment of choice for the demanding environment at TSA checkpoints.

The Desko device is a battery operated, passenger facing, flat-bed 2D barcode scanner that is ergonomically designed as a convenient passenger scan point.  Once the passenger scans their cell phone, a simple GREEN or RED LED displays the result of the barcode validation.  Inside the BPV is a stand-alone controller with a full public key verification library that operates without any host connectivity.  Digital signature technology ensures that barcodes cannot be copied or shared.  And finally an easy to read 2-line display faces the TSA agent confirming the results of the security information and barcode scan.

Today there are over 33 airports now installed with the Desko BPV with CO, DL, NW, and the list is growing.  Everybody likes options, and sometimes little options make a big difference – like getting your boarding pass in the taxi on the way to the airport or while standing in the TSA line.
