DESKO Introduces ePass Reader for Government Authorities
Bayreuth, March 21st 2006 DESKO offers with its ePass reader system a
modern tool that for the first time can detect biometric data by using
RFID technology. The ePass reader is integrated into a keyboard and
consequently fits perfect to already existing EDV environment at
government authorities. The device needs no external power supply and
is connected via USB like an ordinary keyboard. Furthermore DESKO
provides a piece of software, which is specifically designed for
passport verification while handing out new passports to citizens.
Though the new biometric passports are available since last year, i.e. in Germany, government authorities hardly have any possibility to show citizens what data is stored on the chip, which is embedded in the new passport. By using the new DESKO passport reader system government authorities now have the possibility to install an integrated solution that is particularly designed for this specific need. The system follows the Basic Access Control procedure (BAC), which says, that before getting access to the data stored on the chip the Machine Read-able Zone (MRZ) of the passport document has to be red. The DESKO solution handles this procedure, installed to make sure that no unau-thorized person gets access to the data stored on the RFID chip, in two steps. First it reads the MRZ via an integrated OCR swipe-through-reader and then the closed document is put into a, also integrated, RFID reader device. “The procedure and the design are well thought-out and are based on experience. As a result the system allows inte-gration into an existing EDV environment and on furthermore even older passport, where only OCR data reading is necessary, can be handled”, explains Bruno Geyer Managing Director of DESKO.
On the one hand DESKO relies with its newest development in the field of travel and security on proven and tested OCR reader technology, developed and completed through the years by DESKO. On the other hand DESKO focuses on innovative RFID solutions, which meet the requirements of the future. The solution consist of hard- and software can be fully integrated into existing EDV environments, only a standard PC system with USB 2.0 capability and a screen or display is required.
